Step 1: Log in to your account at

Step 2: Click on your user name on the right-hand side of the header menu. Select “My Profile” from the dropdown menu.

Step 3: From the My Profile screen, select the “MFA” tab.

Step 4: From within the MFA tab, select your preferred method of authentication. Cowbell strongly recommends that all users select “Google Authenticator” or other MFA solutions rather than SMS which is less secure - please see our article What is Multi-Factor Authentication?
The process described below focuses on Google Authenticator but is very similar if you opt to use other authenticating methods.

Step 5: When you select Authenticator as your MFA method, a pop-up window will appear.

  1. Install the Google Authenticator app on your mobile device. Google Authenticator is available for iOS and Android.

  2. Open the Google Authenticator app. Add a new site to use with Google Authenticator by selecting the “+” button in the bottom right corner of the app.

  3. Select “Scan a QR code.”

  4. Position the QR code displayed in the pop-up window inside the green square of the Google Authenticator app.

  5. The Google Authenticator app will now display a time-sensitive 6-digit code. Enter the code you see into the first set of boxes in the pop-up window.

  6. As an added security precaution, during the initial setup of MFA on the Cowbell platform, you will be required to enter two codes from the Google Authenticator app. It is important that you enter these codes sequentially, one after the other, as they appear on your Google Authenticator app.

As the timer for the 6-digit code in the Google Authenticator app, represented by a blue circle that collapses into smaller pie slices, begins to expire, the initial 6-digit code will turn red and begin to flash. Wait for the initial code to expire. When a new code appears, enter the new code into the second set of boxes in the pop-up window before its timer expires.

  7. Press the “Enable MFA” blue button. If you successfully entered the codes, a green confirmation message will appear at the bottom of the screen.

Step 6: Test your MFA implementation.

  1. Log out of the Cowbell platform by clicking on your user name in the upper right-hand corner of the screen and selecting “Logout” from the drop-down menu.

  2. Log in to the Cowbell platform. After you enter your Email and Password, six boxes will appear. Open your Google Authenticator app, enter the 6-digit code associated with your Cowbell account, then press Sign-In. You should now have access to your Cowbell account.
